Manufacturing Simulation – Are More Acronyms Needed?

"Simulation" is an ambiguous term. If the product development industry is to champion the use and advancement of simulation technologies, it is reasonable to assume that the terminology and definitions of those technologies be consistent and well understood.

The acronym CAE (Computer-Aided Engineering) has evolved to encompass a number of distinct technical disciplines and tools within the product design and engineering community. Can the same be said for manufacturing simulation? What is proposed is a framework or a context of understanding that applies to the variations inherent across the spectrum of manufacturing simulation solutions.
